Urologic Oncology Fellowship

The Urologic Oncology Fellowship program at UCSF offers multidisciplinary training in all aspects of urologic oncology. The program consists of one year of laboratory research and at least one year of clinical urologic oncology. The fellowship program is accredited by the Society of Urologic Oncology. Our basic science research efforts are predominately focused on prostate cancer, bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma. Several nationally recognized scientists participate in these efforts with considerable funding from the National Institutes of Health. Our prostate cancer program is further supported by one of the few Special Projects in Research Excellence (SPORE) grants awarded in prostate cancer research. In addition to basic science research, opportunities exist for clinical research and outcomes research through the UCSF Urology Outcomes Research Group. Candidates for fellowship have a wide array of research opportunities available to them including androgen receptor biology, genomic alterations, tumor immunology, Phase I evaluation of novel drugs, and biomarker identification and validation. Although not required, previous fellows have successfully received American Foundation for Urologic Diseases (AFUD) grants.

The clinical rotation provides a broad exposure to all aspects of urologic oncology. The fellow participates in the operating room, in outpatient evaluation and management and in conferences. The program offered is multidisciplinary and provides instruction and support for the disciplines of radiology, radiation oncology, medical oncology and urologic oncology. The clinical service is very busy and provides an opportunity for the fellow to participate in all types of urologic oncology operative procedures including major open surgery, complex reconstruction and laparoscopic oncology. The majority of clinical work is performed at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mt. Zion, but fellows also participate in oncology cases at the UCSF Parnassus Campus Moffitt Hospital, San Francisco Veterans Administration Hospital and at San Francisco General Hospital. Our program is closely tied to departmental activities, and as a result, the oncology fellow is able to benefit from the expertise of the entire faculty.

Application Process

The urologic oncology fellowship is open to persons who have completed a residency program in urology, are licensable in the state of California, and will be a candidates for certification by the for American Board of Urology.
