Clinical Trials

Performance of clinical trials is a departmental priority. The department and affiliated programs are conducting investigational studies of treatments for genitourinary cancer and other conditions with the goal of improving diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of urologic disease. There are over 30 open studies analyzing the effects of drug therapies, treatment interventions, nutritional and lifestyle interventions, and active surveillance. The clinical trials group, overseen by the G-CEPS program, manages protocols for both intervention trials and observational research for the department. Studies are funded by the National Institutes of Health, industry and intramurally. Study protocols include research collaborations with cancer cooperative groups, the National Cancer Institute, other academic medical centers, and private industry. Improvements made in clinical care for urologic disorders at UCSF are shared with other health professionals and yield improved health care worldwide.

Our research group recently completed the Molecular Effects of Nutrition Supplements (MENS) trial. The MENS trial is a NCI funded randomized clinical trial of men with prostate cancer, opting for active surveillance. This trial is designed to better understand how two nutritional supplements, lycopene (tomato extract) and fish oil, affect the prostate tissue microenvironment. This trial is closed to enrollment.
