In 1993, Society of Urologic Oncology initiated an annual award and lectureship in honor of Dr. Willet Whitmore, who had been involved in early discussions on the formation of the Society and is considered the father of urologic oncology. Peter Carroll, MD, MPH is the recipient of the 2020 prestigious award and will deliver the keynote address at the annual meeting in December.

“In my role as SUO Immediate Past President and current Chair of the Awards Committee it was a great personal pleasure to notify Dr. Carroll that he would be the 2020 recipient of the Whitmore Award, the SUO’s highest honor,” says Christopher Evans, MD, FACS.

According to Dr. Evans, Dr. Carroll will “receive this award for his many contributions to our current understanding and management of prostate cancer. Dr. Carroll initiated one of the first prostate cancer databases with CaPSURE and used it both to study prostate cancer questions and mentor many trainees and junior faculty in clinical research. His epidemiologic and outcomes research has contributed greatly to our guidelines. As one of Dr. Willet Whitmore’s final fellows at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the award brings Dr. Carroll’s accomplishments full circle with his mentor. And having trained at UCSF under Dr. Carroll, it was an honor to inform him of this award.”
