What is the purpose of this study?
 

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a 2-year wellness program focused on diet and exercise improves biological, clinical, and quality of life outcomes in men choosing surgery as primary treatment for prostate cancer.

This study is open to men who must enroll prior to receiving surgery (prostatectomy).

Participants who complete the study assessments will receive up to $150 ($50 at 6, 12, and 24 months)

  • Are at least age 18.
  • Have prostate cancer and plan to have surgery (prostatectomy) in the next 6-12 weeks.
  • Can read English.
  • You have been treated for prostate cancer with surgery or other treatments.                                        

 

 

 

 

 

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Answer survey questions about demographics, diet, exercise, smoking, quality of life.
     
  • Come onsite to UCSF or local LabCorp/Quest to donate blood/urine.
     
  • Depending on group assignment, some participants may receive remote coaching with an exercise or diet coach 9 times over 2 years and access to an online portal to track specific habits.
     
  • All participants will receive educational materials on diet and exercise, a 9-week text messaging program beginning a week before surgery that focuses on your recovery after surgery, and will receive a personalized lifestyle report, heart rate monitor and resistance bands either at the beginning or end of the study, depending on your group assignment.

Those who take part can receive up to $150.
