UCSF’s Graduate Medical Education department recognized Maurice Garcia MD, MAS, Assistant Professor, Urology, with a 2016 Excellence and Innovation Award for his work with transgender surgeries and unique anatomy courses.
The award was presented at the GME Celebration and QI Symposium in June for his, “clinical work, his mentorship and commitment.” Several of the nominating residents wrote that Dr. Garcia’s work with this under represented population was a source of inspiration. Several letters also discussed his compassion and skill in communicating with his patients during one of the most difficult times of their lives.
Writes Peter Carroll, MD, MPH, Professor and Chair, Department of Urology, "In addition to being a caring and talented physician, Maurice has contributed well to the department. This includes his work with bladder fiducial markers; his unique transgender anatomy course; and the development of an app to teach Kegel exercises. At all points, he embodies our department’s commitment to offering the highest quality urologic care for all, innovative research programs and an outstanding education for future leaders in the field."
