Max Bowman, MD, recently appointed Urology Chief Resident at UCSF, has been honored with the 2022-23 GME Award for Excellence and Innovation. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to graduate medical education, marked by a commitment to educational and clinical quality improvement, service excellence, and innovation.
Dr. Bowman was nominated by Drs. Breyer, Hampson and Van Kuiken and was noted for his focus on quality improvement, education, and inclusivity. Notably, he spearheaded efforts to enhance departmental satisfaction with conferences, employing pre and post surveys to objectively measure progress. His findings on M&M process improvement were showcased at the AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago, and he has submitted a manuscript for publication.
For the 2022-23 GME Residents and Fellows Leading Interprofessional Continuous Improvement Teams (REFLECT) endeavor, Dr. Bowman came up with the idea of the Rosetta Kidney Stone project, which emerged from his observation that non-English speaking patients lacked equal access to pre and post procedural instructions compared to their English-speaking counterparts. Collaborating closely with clinic staff, he identified documents for translation and integrated them into the clinic workflow. The project's success garnered praise from both patients and staff, with requests for additional patient resources pouring in.
In addition to his impactful contributions within the urology department, Dr. Bowman shared his expertise through noon conference presentations for the internal medicine, pediatrics, and family medicine residency programs. His sessions on high-yield urology topics have been invaluable for broadening the knowledge base of fellow residents in these specialties.
