Dr. Alan Shindel awarded the SOM Excellence in Teaching Award 2023

Dr. Shindel, Professor of Urology, was honored by the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators with the School of Medicine Excellence in Teaching award. This is a peer-nominated award that recognizes frontline teachers of learners. "These frontline teachers are 'unsung heroes' who demonstrate their daily dedication to education and teach in a manner that creates an encouraging and intellectually stimulating environment that promotes critical thinking and learning" The Haile T. Debas Academy Medical Educators. 

Dr. Alan ShindelDr. Shindel is Associate Program Director of the UCSF Dept. of Urology Undergraduate Medical Education program; in this role he supervises the medical student experience in urology for both pre-clinical and clinical students.  In addition, he is a UCSF School of Medicine Coach. In this role, he supports medical student’s professional and personal development through teaching, advice, and encouragement throughout their medical school training.  He was recently also selected as an Inquiry Advisor for medical student research projects.

When asked about the award, Dr Shindel replied: "I am honored and humbled to have received this prestigious award.  UCSF is host to innumerable outstanding educators at all levels and I believe all of them are worthy of recognition for the critical work they do. It is a privilege to teach (and learn) from our students and residents!”
