Education
Biography
Tom Lue, graduated with highest honors from the Kaohsiung Medical College in Taiwan in 1972. He received surgical residency training at Macky Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan and Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York (1973-1978) followed by urologic residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn (1978-1981). He completed a neurourology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco in 1982.
Lue was the recipient of the American Urological Association's Gold Cystoscope Award, and the AUA President Citation Award. He is also the recipient of the "Donier’s Most Innovative Research Award" from the American Foundation of Urological Diseases and the MERIT Award from NIDDK, NIH. Lue was the Chair of the International Consultation on Sexual Medicine held in Paris in July 2003, and the honorary president of the same in 2007. In 2016, he was also awarded the John Lattimer Medal and presented the Lattimer lecture at the AUA annual meeting.
Clinical Interests
Lue's clinical research resulted in the development of several diagnostic tests: the penile injection and stimulation test, ultrasonic classification of Peyronie’s disease, a color duplex ultrasound test for erectile dysfunction and priapism, and pharmacologic cavernosography for venous leakage. He has also introduced several new medical and surgical treatments for Peyronie’s disease and different types of priapism.
Research Interests
Lue established the Knuppe Molecular Urology Lab and the research encompasses development of in vivo and in vitro models for mechanistic studies in: penile physiology, cavernous nerve regeneration, various types of erectile dysfunction, stress incontinence, overactive bladder and endogenous stem cells.
