Biography
Dr. Tzou earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, followed by his M.D. from the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. He completed his residency in Urology at the University of Arizona, where he received numerous awards for providing excellent, compassionate patient care. He completed a 2-year Endourological Society fellowship in Endourology and Laparoscopy at UCSF under the mentorship of Marshall Stoller and Thomas Chi. In 2025, he was recruited to join the faculty at UCSF.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Tzou’s clinical practice focuses on the management of complex urinary stone disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He is an expert in advanced surgical techniques, including ultrasound-guided percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, and suction-assisted technologies for stone removal. He regularly is invited to teach national and international courses with respect to innovative surgical techniques, especially with respect ultrasound-guided PCNL. He also specializes in minimally invasive treatments for BPH and helped introduce Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) at UCSF.
Research Interests
Dr. Tzou’s research centers on the microbiological and biochemical complexities of kidney stones, including the role of bacterial endotoxins in stone formation and post-operative sepsis. His work has received numerous national and international awards, as well as significant institutional and extramural funding. Dr. Tzou has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and collaborates on multi-institutional studies as a member of the EDGE Research Consortium. His dedication to translational research aims to improve patient outcomes and safety in urologic care.
