What is the purpose of this study?

  • The purpose of this study is to determine if high intensity aerobic and resistance training increases survival compared to self-directed exercise in men with metastatic prostate cancer.
     
  • UCSF is participating as part of a global study. The INTERVAL study is open at 12 sites and in 7 countries.
     
  • The Movember Foundation is providing support for the conduct of this study.

 

 

Who can join?

  
You may be able to join if...                                                                                           You can't join if...
 
  • Are at least age 18.
     
  • Have prostate cancer and are being treated with androgen deprivation therapy.
     
  • Have metastatic prostate cancer.
  • Your cancer has not spread
     
  • You have health conditions that may prevent you from performing the exercises that are part of the study
     
  • You already have structured high-intensity exercise routines (we assess this using a survey).                                         

 

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Answer survey questions about demographics, exercise/diet, and quality of life every quarter.
  • Come onsite to UCSF at baseline, 6, 12, and 24 months to donate blood/urine.
  • Come onsite to UCSF at baseline, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months for exercise testing (documentation of negative COVID19 test may be required). Intervention arm additionally comes every quarter for a short 15-minute constant load test.

There is no compensation for this study. The study is funded by foundation support (Movember Foundation). Parking and food are provided for study visits at UCSF.
