UCSF urology professor Tom F. Lue, MD, FACS, received the 2013 Ferdinand C. Valentine Award during a reception at the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) on April 10, 2013. The award is sponsored by the NYAM’s Section on Urology 
and the New York Section of the American Urological Association and honors exceptional physician-scientists in this surgical specialty.
Dr. Lue, who is vice chairman of the UCSF Department of Urology, is an internationally recognized expert in penile physiology and erectile dysfunction, and has made significant research and clinical contributions to these areas in the course of his academic career.
A graduate of Kaohsiung Medical College in Taiwan, Dr. Lue completed his urology residency at SUNY Downstate and a fellowship in neurourology at UCSF, where he has served on the faculty since 1982. Dr. Lue occupies the Emil Tanagho endowed chair in clinical urology at UCSF and is the founder of the Knuppe Molecular Urology Laboratory at UCSF.
As part of the Valentine award ceremonies, Dr. Lue delivered a lecture on his research into non-invasive progenitor cell therapy, a technique that has potential clinical application in a range of urological diseases, including erectile dysfunction, stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder and degenerative renal diseases.
